The Challenge

Roth UK, a leading name in underfloor heating (UFH) and renewable heating systems, required a high-performance flowing screed for the floor build-up at its demo centre and lab facility in Knowsley. As a space used to showcase and test UFH performance to specifiers, installers, and end clients, the screed itself needed to do more than simply cover the pipework. It needed to actively support and demonstrate optimal thermal diffusivity, ensuring heat from the UFH system transfers efficiently and evenly to the floor surface.

In addition to installing across 100m² of floor spanning multiple rooms and different floor elevations, requiring a consistent, self-levelling finish throughout a varied layout, the challenge was to achieve fast, even heat transfer from the UFH pipework to the floor surface, minimising lag and hot/cold spotting.

The Solution

THERMIO MAX® FD E2C® was specified for its enhanced thermal conductivity, engineered specifically to optimise heat transfer performance in UFH applications. Its self-levelling, free-flowing consistency allowed the screed to fully encapsulate the UFH pipework with no voids, ensuring consistent thermal contact across the whole floor area — even where the layout demanded working across different rooms and floor elevations within the same pour programme.

The addition of Faster Drying (FD) and Early to Cover (E2C®) technology meant the floor could be brought into commissioning and use significantly faster than with a standard screed, supporting Roth UK's project timeline for the demo centre.

Results and Benefits

The TARMAC and ECOFLO teams ensured the pour was completed to the exacting standards required for a facility that would itself be used to demonstrate UFH performance to visitors, maintaining consistency across the varying elevations and room layouts.

100m² of floor successfully installed across multiple rooms and floor elevations, with a consistent, self-levelling finish throughout

Improved thermal diffusivity across the UFH zone, supporting faster, more even heat-up times

Full, void-free encapsulation of UFH pipework for consistent, reliable heat transfer

Faster time to floor covering thanks to FD E2C® technology, keeping the March 2026 project on programme

A high-performing showcase floor that allows Roth UK to demonstrate best-practice UFH + screed installation to specifiers and clients on site
